Dr Alun Thomas has 25 years of experience in civil engineering with a specialism in tunnelling. Having graduated from Cambridge University in 1994, he went on to work for several major design companies – Mott MacDonald and Ramboll – with a short stint working on site for contractor. Latterly he was Director for Tunnelling at Minova, a global supplier of materials and chemicals for ground support.
Dr Thomas has a broad experience of many types of tunnelling methods from immersed tubes to segmental linings, from closed face TBMs to hand excavation under compressed air. He is a recognised expert in sprayed concrete lined (SCL/NATM) tunnels and numerical modelling. He has been involved in promoting the use of innovative, low carbon technologies such as permanent sprayed concrete, fibre reinforcement, GFRP rock bolts and spray-applied waterproof membranes. He has been involved in many of the recent major UK tunnelling projects such as the Jubilee Line Extension, Heathrow Express, Thameswater Ring Main, Terminal 5, Victoria Station Upgrade and the Elizabeth Line (Crossrail), as well as working on design and construction of tunnels internationally. Notably he has worked in Australia, Denmark, Hungary, Hong Kong, Iceland, India, Norway, Qatar, Russia, Singapore, Qatar, Turkey and USA. His skills are summarized in the skills matrix below.
Dr Thomas has given lectures at the British Tunnelling Society course, the Budapest Technical University and the Danish Technical University. He is currently runnning courses in Soft Ground Tunnelling via Ingeoexpert. A regular contributor to magazines and conferences with more than 70 publications, he has written articles on subjects ranging from sustainability to user-friendly contracts. More recently he has published on carbon footprints for tunnels and how to reduce the environmental impact. His book, “Sprayed concrete lined tunnels”, has been published in English, Chinese and Turkish. The second edition was published in 2020.
